Kayon Mountain
lime, peach, kumquat
Guji | Heirloom | 1800-2100 masl | Natural
We’re proud to share this specially-prepared, naturally-processed coffee. This lot showcases an impressive balance of terroir and processing skill with notes of lime, peach, refined sugar, and kumquat.
Kayon Mountain is a standout estate in Ethiopia’s Guji zone, a remote, forested region long protected by the Guji tribe’s conservation efforts. Founded in 2012 by Ismael Hassen near the town of Taro in the Odo Shakiso district, Kayon Mountain spans over 500 hectares and is planted with select Ethiopian arabica cultivars, including varieties bred by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center. Unusually large for Ethiopia, where most farmers manage only a few hundred trees, Kayon Mountain operates its own export business, bypassing the national auction system, and follows an organic, forest-preserving farming mandate set by its land grant.
The estate processes both its own harvests and cherry from 12 nearby organic farms, all Rainforest Alliance certified. During harvest, cherries are hand-sorted, sun-dried on raised beds, and further refined through meticulous dry-hulling and final sorting. As Guji emerges as a modern hub of conservation-minded, quality-driven coffee, Kayon Mountain exemplifies the region’s promise as a new frontier in Ethiopian specialty coffee.
