In Nyeri, near the base of Mount Kenya, the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society is comprised of over 600 producers, most with modest sized plots that can be measured by the number of trees rather than parcel size. Gatomboya is one of the four washing stations in this cooperative society along with Karatina, Karindundu and Gaturiri. Gatomboya is a Kikuyu word for “swamp,” referring to the nearby Gatomboya River. Water from here is used to wash and ferment coffees at the factory before they’re dried on raised beds. It is widely known as one of the best managed washing stations in Nyeri and has been delivering impressive coffees for many years.
