Colombia
La Despensa
papaya, sugarcane, orange spice
Urrao | Chiroso | 1950-2200 masl | Washed
Easily one of the standouts on our cupping table this season, this 100% Chiroso lot brings potent sweetness and lush notes of papaya, watermelon, sugarcane, and orange spice.
Tucked within the lush valleys of Urrao in Antioquia, the small enclave of La Despensa embodies a landscape unlike most other coffee growing regions in the country. Instead of steep canyons and rugged cliffs, Urrao unfolds in rolling pastures and wide, fertile valley floors nourished by cool mountain air and natural springs. Sitting between 1,950 and 2,200 meters above sea level, the region’s consistently mild climate, rarely exceeding 77°F, allows coffee cherries to ripen slowly, developing exceptional sweetness and density. The area’s rich volcanic soils, abundant water, and balanced temperatures create ideal conditions for producing complex, high-elevation coffees that reflect the calm, green beauty of their surroundings. Once overlooked as too cold for coffee, Urrao has emerged as one of Colombia’s most exciting micro-regions.
